Railway Engineering Apprenticeship Scheme
The East Kent Railway Trust based in Shepherdswell, near Dover, is a registered charity that maintains the industrial heritage of the former Kent Colliery Line. As well as providing a unique visitor attraction, with lovingly restored heritage trains operating on a two mile circuit of the Kent countryside, the Trust runs a railway engineering apprenticeship scheme.
Working in partnership with ARC Academy UK, the Trust employs 35 16-24 year old trainees who are developing their engineering skills by maintaining the heritage railway whilst at the same time studying for a recognised City & Guilds qualification. Successful trainees then have the qualifications and experience to move into the wider rail industry.
